Noise. Those little sounds humans make when they’re half-heartedly listening to you, or when they sigh; the hmms and the ahhs. The little laughs and the grunts. The noise in between the silences; shifting people on bus seats, or the swish of a silky gown. The clink of glasses in the dish water, and the rustle of grass in the wind. The sounds. Oh, the noises. In the deep of the night, when it’s just you, the sound of pages turning and the coyote howling to the sky. The kinship you feel at that moment. The loneliness. In the late morning, the sounds of sewing machines and conversation. People talking around each other. Sitting in silence, the only sound is of breathing. The sounds of paw steps and of pen scratching on paper. Blind people have that one advantage; their ears are much much sharper than the ones that can see. Close your eyes for a minute, and think about what you can hear. Train yourselves to hear. Listen. Do you hear that?
