Pure indigo darkness lay upon the land
And sat on the mountains and meditated
Within the piny forests
And everything was still and silent in the
Piny forests and icy rivers between
Steep canyons of red and brown,
And it was dark and shadowed and still.
The sky turned, it turned gray, while the stars
Chased each other down the western horizon
And slid down below
The place where the sky kisses the earth,
Laughing and shrieking they tried to catch
The moon as they sailed by,
And the last star faded out with the moon.
Above the gray of the sky, a ribbon of pink
Appeared and a ribbon of lilac grew above
And they mixed in
Cheerful abandon with the brightening sky,
And the blue of the sky gave a hearty hello
To the touches of flame
On the disappearing clumps of night clouds.
And then the sun peeped over the lands
And the trees and the mountains flamed
Into an imitation of
A mighty roaring forest fire blazing away,
And the orb of light came all the way out
Over the trees
And there was nothing left but sunshine and sky.
